Everyone who wants to learn more about life in Västerbotten and its history should visit Västerbottens museum. This is a family-friendly museum with exhibitions and programmes on heritage, art and textiles. Further attractions include the Sune Jonsson Center for Documentary Photography, a creative workshop for Children, a museum shop and a cosy café where you can eat outside if the wether allows you to. Outside, there are historical búildings from all over Västerbotten. Entry is free.

It tells how the Sami people populated the forests and mountains, how fishing peoples lived along the coast and about the importance of skis as a form of transport in this region. It even has the world’s oldest ski, which is older than the Egyptian pyramids!

The open-air museum has around 40 buildings from the county, including a typical Västerbotten farmhouse, bakery and threshing house. The most recent additions are three different types of Sami “kåta” that are timbered and built using peat, in accordance with examples from around Västerbotten.

The museum also houses temporary exhibitions in the fields of heritage, art and photography. There are scheduled activities throughout the year, with traditional celebrations on, Midsummer and the second week of Advent, when the Christmas Market is held.
