Between the years 1996 and 2004 twelve artist made art work along thie roads E12, 92 and 1052.

The association Vägen Sju Älvar was formed in 1965 by the municipalities of that time, Holmsund, Umeå, Vännäs, Bjurholm, Fredrika, Åsele and Dorotea. The goal was initially to work for an improved road standards and thereby create an attractive tourist route between the coast and the mountains. The vision of an Art Route materialized.

Twelve artists were selected and they studied the environment and together with an artistic council suggestions of art where chosen. The first work of art, ”Vägledning”, was built in 1996, but nature has taken over and the artwork is not there any longer. The vast majority of the remaining works of art were then built during 1998. The result of this first project was probably the longest permanent sculpture trail in the world. A 350 kilometer long art exhibition from Holmsund by the coast in the east to Borgafjäll in the Southern Lappland mountains in the west.
