Summer evenings in the Holmö archipelago are magical: gentle breezes from the sun-kissed waters of the Kvarken straits, the scent of flowering rose bay and tarred boats, the sound of a boat engine or perhaps a moped, happy voices on the village road and on the large veranda of the harbour tavern, the soft lapping of waves at dusk and beautiful sunsets by the lighthouse stations at Bergudden and Stora Fjäderägg.

Go for a day trip, using the ferry service from Norrfjärden laid on by the Swedish Road Administration. Sit on the sundeck and enjoy the crossing, visit Holmön’s boat museum which is one of Sweden’s finest archipelago museums. Go for a cycle ride along the winding village road between red cottages and grey barns. Visit the small, white, wooden church up on Strandberget or take a look at the abandoned churchyard down in the village. Try your hand at perch-fishing at Jäbäcksundet, swim in the sea, rent a kayak or go for a shoreline walk along the new hiking trails on Ängesön in the south. You can buy the provisions you need for your outing at the shop Holmöaffär´n in the middle of the village. If you have time, why not stay and enjoy the entire summer night? You can spend the night at one of the island’s three youth hostels which offer comfortable beds and friendly hosts. Several locals also have cottages to rent out. Or why not borrow a fishermen sauna in one of the sheltered inlets or sleep in your own tent in unspoiled countryside? With the sail-driven Holmöslupen, you can go an exciting trip out to Stora Fjäderägg’s lighthouse station with its ornithological station and youth hostel. Here the skipper’s goats graze on the fields by the shore, not far from the surf. Out at sea, seals sun themselves on reefs. The sloop and other privately-owned boats can also take you out to other places in the extensive marine nature reserve of the Holmö islands, Sweden’s largest.
